Geomagnetic Observatories

A global network of geomagnetic observatories is the backbone of studies concerning the field sources in the Earth's core, ionosphere and magnetosphere. Moreover, the data are used for models and maps with practical applications, and the determination of magnetic activity indices for space weather monitoring.

From its A.-Schmidt-Observatory for Geomagnetism in Niemegk , GFZ operates a number of geomagnetic observatories and observatory cooperation worldwide. Further observatories are operated or supported through national and international cooperation. 16 are current member of INTERMAGNET. Observatories operated by GFZ are the Adolf Schmidt Observatory for Geomagnetism (NGK); the Geomagnetic Observatory Tristan da Cunha (TDC), the Geomagnetic Observatory St. Helena (SHE), the Geomagnetic Observatory Santa Maria (SMA*), and the Geomagnetic Observatory Wingst (WNG).
