GIPP - Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam

The "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam (GIPP)" provides seismic, magnetotelluric and geodetic instruments and sensors for projects of GFZ groups, universities and other research facilities. It is hosted by Section 2.2 "Geophysical Imaging" and Section 1.1 "Space Geodetic Techniques" of the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences. Since its foundation in 1993 the GIPP has supported more than 483 geoscientific projects. The GIPP is part of the Modular Earth Science Infrastructure (MESI) at GFZ.

The proceedings of instrument supply on loan are laid down in "Rules of instrument supply on loan through the geophysical Instrument Pool (GIPP) of the GFZ". For application see link "Application". A steering board, which convenes twice a year, evaluates the applications and makes recommendations. The decision for the allocation of the instruments is made by the Executive Board of the GFZ.

  • DEPAS Pool

The "German instrument pool for amphibian seismology" (Deutscher Geräte-Pool für amphibische Seismologie | DEPAS) provides broadband-onshore stations and ocean bottom seimometers for the preferred use within amphibious projects. The onshore component is maintained by the GFZ, the offshore component is operated by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute Helmholtz-Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven (AWI). For the marine part of the DEPAS instrument pool look at http://www.awi.de/en The DEPAS is part of the Modular Earth Science Infrastructure | MESI at GFZ.

  • GIPP MT

The magnetotelluric instruments are part of the "Geophysical Instrument Pool Potsdam(GIPP)" which means that the instruments are generally available for academic use to all German Universities. The allocation of the instruments is decided by the GFZ Executive Board, following the recommendation of the GIPP Steering Board (Lenkungsausschuss). The application form can be found here. All of the magnetotelluric instruments described below are stored and maintained at the premises of the Geomagnetic Observatory in Niemegk.

Detailed information on the intrumentation of the GIPP is given in the instrument database.

  • Seismic Pool

The seismic-pool provides a large number of data logger, broadband seismometers and shortperiod sensors. - Recorders (stand-alone) / recorders (mulit-channel) - Broadband seismometers - Geophones - Sources - Fiber-optic gyroscope allowing accurate set-up of seismometers
